paL: special mix for RadiaLx

A special mix (soon online) of "Essays on Radio: Can I have 2 minutes of your time?" (Crónica 020), was done by paL for RadiaLx.

It was part of two special Crónica programs (the other by Pedro Tudela and Miguel Carvalhais) that were broadcasted on this festival of Radio Art, that was on for 9 days non-stop. The program included Gilles Aubry, @c, The Beautiful Schizophonic, Negativland, Paulo Raposo, Gintas K, Carlos Santos, André Gonçalves, Toy Bizarre, Felix Kubin, Christof Migone, Brandon Labelle, among many others.

Uma "special mix" (brevemente online) de "Essays on Radio: Can I have 2 minutes of your time?" (Crónica 020), foi concebida por paL para RadiaLx.

A Crónica participou com dois programas (o outro concebido por Pedro tudela e Miguel Carvalhais) neste festival internacional de Arte Rádio que se realizou em Lisboa, entre 20 e 28 de Setembro, reunindo um conjunto internacional de artistas, produtores e agentes culturais. "Guitarras Variáveis" (Variable guitars) is an experimental project that approaches and explores the improvised side of the guitar as an instrument of sound creation. It aims to gather musicians, despite their academic or free styled orientations on a uncommitted way of guitar-chating. Amplified influences, repeated chords, rebuild non-fixed structures and distortorted melodies focus on exploring the act of performance, the individual techniques and the exchanging attitude.

The ideia came up at EME2003 - Experimental Music Encounters (Palmela - Setúbal, Portugal), where Pedro Almeida invited musicians Luis Varatojo and João Hora for a improvised guitar gig. Here is the list of the participants since then: André Gonçalves (okSuitcase), Alexandre Costa, Alexandre Soares (3 Tristes Tigres), Horácio Marques, João Hora (FFT), LOC, Luís Varatojo (A Naifa), Manuel Guimarães, Paulo Lopes (Repórter Estrábico), Pedro Almeida (aCUR), Pedro Boavida, Shinjiro Yamaguchi (Two-Lines) and Tó trips (Dead Combo)

"Guitarras Variáveis" é o resultado de uma união de músicos que usam a guitarra como um instrumento comum de exploração, composição e base melódica. A consciência e a importância das influências, e dos géneros que cada um extraiu no seu percurso individual, levam os participantes a expor o lado descomprometido dos acordes estandardizados do rock, das notas repetitivas da electrónica e da fluidez espontânea da improvisação. O lado imaginativo desta partilha sonora procura no experimentalismo uma outra forma de apresentação e atitude musical da guitarra.

O projecto surgiu numa iniciativa de Pedro Almeida, com Luís Varatojo e João Hora nos Encontros de Música Experimental EME2003, em Palmela (Setúbal, Portugal). First of the three performances at the ICA (London, UK) curated by Crónica for the 2007 Atlantic Waves festival on November 10, 2007. The first live collaboration between The Beautiful Schizophonic, Gintas K and Pal opened the night with stunning visuals by Tina Frank.
